You're standing at the National Gallery of Slovenia, the Narodna galerija in Slovene. This is the country's national art museum. Start by looking at the oldest part of the building. It went up in 1896, designed by the Czech architect František Škabrout. Back then it wasn't a museum at all, but a Slovene cultural centre, the Narodni dom, home to a whole range of cultural societies of national importance.
