You're standing at the Eden Project in Cornwall, five kilometres outside St Austell. Take a look down into the pit. This is an old quarry where china clay was dug for over 160 years. By the mid-1990s it was all but exhausted. In 1981 it even played a role on TV: the BBC used it as the planet Magrathea in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
