You're standing at Warkworth Castle, a medieval ruin in a loop of the River Coquet, less than a mile from the North Sea coast. First, look at the big tower on the north side, rising above the village. That's the keep, built in the late fourteenth century in the shape of a Greek cross. One historian called it a masterpiece of medieval English architecture. On the north face, look for the large lion, the emblem of the Percy family. Up near the top, carved angels hold shields. These sculptures were probably once painted, so they'd have really stood out.
