You're standing at La Lanterna, the lighthouse of Genoa. For almost five centuries it has been the symbol of this city. Take a look up. The tower is made of two square blocks stacked on top of each other, each topped with a terrace. Right at the top sits the lantern itself. Altogether that's about 76 metres of masonry. And because it stands on a rocky rise, the light shines more than 110 metres above the sea. On a clear night, ships can spot it more than 60 kilometres away.
