You're standing among the remains of Amiternum, an ancient town in the valley of the Aterno river, about nine kilometres from L'Aquila. Have a look around. What lies quietly in the grass here was once one of the most important places of the Sabines, the people who lived in these mountains before Rome took over. In 293 BC Amiternum was defeated by the Romans, and from then on it grew into a Roman town.
