You're standing on Piazza San Frediano in Lucca, in front of one of the most visited churches in town. Look up at the façade. That huge golden mosaic is hard to miss. It shows the Ascension of Christ. At the top, Christ sits in an almond-shaped halo, carried by two angels. Below him stand the apostles, looking pretty worked up. Notice something missing in the middle? Mary used to be there, until a pointed Gothic window took her spot. The design is by Berlinghiero Berlinghieri, in a medieval Byzantine style.
