You're standing at Hardknott Roman Fort, on a rocky spur on the western side of the Hardknott Pass. The Romans called this place Mediobogdum. Take a moment to look around. You can see right along the valley of the River Esk, both up and down. That's exactly why the Romans picked this spot: whoever stood here controlled the pass. The fort sat on a Roman road linking the fort at Ambleside to the east with the harbour at Ravenglass on the coast.
