You're standing at Denbigh Castle, high on a rocky hill above the Clwyd valley. Start with the great gatehouse. It's made of three octagonal towers set in a triangle around an octagonal hall. See those bands of stone in different colours? They were meant to show off the royal power of the English king Edward the First. A statue once stood above the entrance, probably of his son Edward the Second. One historian has called this the most sophisticated gatehouse of the thirteenth century.
