You're standing at Utroba, or Utrobata in Bulgarian. It literally means 'the Womb'. This cave lies in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains, close to the village of Ilinitsa, about twenty kilometres from the town of Kardzhali. Take a good look at the entrance. Can you see the shape? It's a long, narrow opening in the rock that looks strikingly like a vulva. That's where the name comes from. The entrance is about three metres tall and two and a half metres wide. Researchers think it started out as a narrow natural slit, which people later widened.
