You're standing on Tala'a Kebira, one of the main streets of the old medina of Fez. In front of you is the Bou Inania Madrasa, a religious school from the fourteenth century. First, look up at the square brick minaret, covered in mosaic tilework. Very few madrasas in Morocco have a minaret like this. There's a reason. This school also served as a Friday mosque, where the weekly sermon was given, just like in the city's great mosques. No other madrasa in the country was granted that status.
