You're standing at Nottingham Castle, high up on Castle Rock. Start by looking at the rock itself. On the south and west sides, the cliffs drop around forty metres straight down. Whoever held this spot could keep an eye on the crossing over the River Trent. No wonder William the Conqueror had a wooden castle built here in 1068, just two years after the Battle of Hastings.
