You're standing at Van Fortress, a massive stone stronghold perched on a steep-sided rock. It sits just west of the city of Van and east of Lake Van. Take a good look at that rock. In the ninth century BC, this was Tushpa, the capital of the ancient kingdom of Urartu. Today the ruins of that city lie spread out below the fortress.
