You're standing at Cēsis Castle, known in German as Wenden. These ruins are among the most impressive in the Baltic states. Take a look at those heavy stone walls and the round towers. Around 1500, three artillery towers were added, because cannons had made the old walls vulnerable. The Western Tower, with its pointed conical roof, stands out most. That roof only went up just before the First World War, to save the precious vaulting inside.
