You're standing on the grounds of the former Marienborn border crossing. While Germany was divided, this was the largest and most important crossing between East and West. Take a look around. East Germany built this whole complex on the hill between 1972 and 1974, on a field of thirty-five hectares. The actual border lay about a kilometre and a half to the west. And that motorway nearby is the A2. Back then, it was simply cut in two right here.
