You're standing at Knin Fortress, high on the steep Spas hill, about a hundred metres above the town. Take a look around. This is the second largest fortress in Croatia, almost half a kilometre long and more than a hundred metres wide. Nearby rises Dinara, the country's highest mountain, and the river Krka has its source close by. No wonder someone built a stronghold here. Whoever held this spot controlled the road from the Dalmatian coast to the interior and on to Bosnia.
