You're standing below the Madara Rider, in northeastern Bulgaria, not far from the town of Shumen. Look up at the sheer cliff face. It's about a hundred metres high, and roughly 23 metres above the ground, a horseman has been carved into the rock, almost life-size. He's riding to the right, driving his spear into a lion lying at his horse's feet. Behind him, a dog runs along. Look closely, because some details have almost disappeared. Centuries of wind and rain have worn away most of the halo around his head, his clothing, and a bird in front of his face.
