You're standing on Piazza della Costituente in Mirandola, in front of the castle of the Pico family. For four centuries, from 1311 to 1711, they ruled this town. Start with that heavy tower above the square. It looks medieval, but it was only built around the 1930s. Check out the battlements on top: each one has a notch shaped like a swallow's tail. That was the style of the Ghibellines, the emperor's supporters.
