You're standing at Kaunos, an ancient port city that once sat right on the border between Caria and Lycia. First, look up at the steep rock above you. That's the acropolis, 152 metres high and ringed by Byzantine walls. Next to it is a smaller fort, the Heraklion. Hard to believe, but that headland once jutted out into the sea. Today the coast is about eight kilometres away. Over the centuries the bay slowly silted up, and İztuzu Beach formed in front of it.
