You're standing at the ruins of Aggstein Castle, high above the right bank of the Danube in the Wachau. The rock it sits on rises about three hundred metres above the river. Have a look around. The ruins stretch for roughly a hundred and fifty metres, with a rocky outcrop at each end. To the west is the Bürgel, the little castle. To the east is a rock called Stein. Bits of foundation there date back to the twelfth century.
