You're standing at Gloucester Cathedral, in the north of the city, close to the River Severn. Start by looking up at the central tower. It rises sixty-nine metres, dates from the fifteenth century and is crowned by four delicate pinnacles. The church itself is a hundred and thirty metres long. At its heart it's Norman, with Gothic additions all around.
