You're standing at Dunvegan Castle, on the Isle of Skye, off the west coast of Scotland. For centuries this has been the seat of the chief of Clan MacLeod. Start by looking at the rock beneath the walls. It rises about fifteen metres above Loch Dunvegan, a sea loch. On the landward side runs a partly natural ditch more than five metres deep. For a long time the only way in was from the water, through the sea gate. A land entrance only arrived in 1748.
