You're standing at the Castle of Guimarães, on a small granite hill at the northern edge of the old town. Take a look at the walls. Together they form a sort of shield shape, with eight rectangular towers and a tall keep right in the middle. For many Portuguese, this is where their country began. In 2007 it was even voted one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.
