You're standing at Mont Saint-Michel, a rocky tidal island in Normandy. First, look all the way up. A medieval abbey crowns the granite rock. On top of the church spire, since 1898, stands a statue of the Archangel Michael, about a hundred and seventy metres above the bay. No surprise that this is one of France's busiest sights, right up there with the Eiffel Tower and Versailles.
