You're standing at Trolltunga, the troll's tongue. After a serious hike, you're now more than 1,100 metres above sea level. Look at that slab of rock. It juts out almost horizontally from the mountain, about 700 metres above the lake Ringedalsvatnet. Now look around. You're gazing over the valleys of Hardanger, ringed by mountains up to around 1,500 metres high. Some of the hilltops are flat plains dotted with lakes, and even in summer you'll spot patches of snow.
