You're standing at Öxarárfoss, a waterfall about twenty metres high in Þingvellir National Park. The name roughly means the waterfall of the axe river. Look at the rock wall the water tumbles over. That's the Almannagjá, a long gorge cutting through the landscape. The river Öxará pours over its edge right here.
