You're standing at Lepenski Vir, on the right bank of the Danube, in the Iron Gates gorge in eastern Serbia. Look across the water. On the far bank rises a bare cliff, Trescovăț, 679 metres high. It looks like a giant sentinel over the old settlement, and its people may have used it to follow the sun.
