You're standing at Alaca Höyük, a great mound of ruins in the heart of Turkey. Höyük means mound, and this one is about fourteen metres high and over three hundred metres long. It holds fourteen layers of settlement, from the Copper Age to the Hittites, with traces of Phrygian, Roman and Ottoman times on top.
