Brod Fortress in Grad Slavonski Brod

You're standing at Brod Fortress, on the Sava River in Slavonski Brod. Have a look around. You'll see ramparts of rammed earth faced with brick, and moats that give the whole place its star shape. This is an eighteenth-century border fortress. Austria built it between 1715 and 1780 as a defence against the Ottoman Empire. It was part of a large defensive system designed by Prince Eugene of Savoy, alongside Osijek and Stara Gradiška.
