You're standing at Karahan Tepe, an archaeological site in the hills of Şanlıurfa province, in southeastern Turkey. Have a look around. It may seem like a bare hillside, but people were living and building here around twelve thousand years ago. The site dates to between 10,000 and 9500 BC. That's before anyone had learned to make pottery, which is why archaeologists call this period the Pre-Pottery Neolithic.
