You're standing at Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe, Saint Michael of the Needle. Look up. That chapel sits right on top of a volcanic plug, eighty-five metres high, just outside Le Puy-en-Velay. There isn't much room up there: the summit is only about fifty-seven metres across. To reach it, you climb 268 steps carved straight into the rock.
