You're standing at the Tropaeum Traiani, Trajan's Trophy, just outside the Romanian village of Adamclisi. Start with the shape. It's a round stone drum, forty metres across, with steps around its base and a cone-shaped roof made of stone slabs. On top sits the trophy itself, framed by two seated women and a standing man with his hands behind his back. Those are prisoners. This is a victory monument, and it wanted you to know it.
