You're standing at Langres Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Mammes, a martyr from the third century. Start with the west front. It doesn't look medieval at all, does it? It's crisp and classical. That's because in the eighteenth century the old Romanesque towers were close to collapsing. So the front was pulled down and rebuilt, designed by the architect Claude-Louis D'Aviler. Look at the columns. At the bottom they're plain Doric, above that Ionic, and at the top Corinthian. Each level gets a little fancier.
