You're standing at Egeskov Castle, on the Danish island of Funen, near the village of Kværndrup. Start by looking at the water. The castle rises straight out of a small lake, up to five metres deep. Originally, the only way in was across a drawbridge. The whole building stands on oak piles. Legend has it that the foundations swallowed an entire oak forest, and that's where the name comes from: Egeskov means oak forest.
