You're standing at the Museum Folkwang in Essen, one of Germany's great collections of nineteenth- and twentieth-century art. Take a look at the building in front of you. It's really two buildings in one. The older part dates from 1960, when the museum reopened after the war. Attached to it is the extension by British architect David Chipperfield. It opened in January 2010, the year Essen and the Ruhr were European Capital of Culture. Chipperfield won the design competition against, among others, Zaha Hadid.
