You're standing at Rumkale, a ruined fortress high on a rock above the Euphrates, about fifty kilometres northeast of Gaziantep. Take a look at that position. A castle on a cliff is unusual in this region. That's exactly why some researchers think this could be Shitamrat, the place the Assyrian king Shalmaneser the Third captured in 855 BC. The water all around is fairly new, by the way. The reservoir of the Birecik Dam has turned the fortress into a peninsula.
