You're standing at the Goethe House on Großer Hirschgraben in Frankfurt. This is where Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the great German poet and playwright, was born on 28 August 1749. Take a look at the façade: yellow plaster, grey trim, and on top a tall dormer that rises three floors above the house. Notice how the upper floors jut out over the street? That double overhang was actually banned because of the fire risk. Goethe's father, Johann Caspar, rebuilt the house in 1755 and 1756. Since it counted as a renovation rather than a new building, he got to keep it.
