You're standing in front of Auxerre Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr. Start with the west front, about forty metres wide. Around the portals you'll find a whole gallery of sculpture. There are saints and biblical figures, but also, rather surprisingly, allegorical figures of the wives of Hercules. Around 1270 a Count of Auxerre got this sculpture project going, and the work carried on into the fifteenth century.
