You're standing at the Moritzburg in Halle, a castle that was a fortress and a palace at the same time. Take a look at those thick stone walls and the round bastions. This place wasn't built to protect the town. It was built to keep it in line. In 1479, unhappy guilds opened the city gates to the troops of the Archbishop of Magdeburg. The new ruler, Ernest of Saxony, was only fourteen. Halle lost its freedoms, and a castle was ordered to keep the town obedient and quiet.
