You're standing at Alarcos, just outside Ciudad Real, in the middle of the Spanish plain of La Mancha. Take a look around. In the twelfth century, this was the southern edge of the Kingdom of Castile. The Guadiana River flows nearby. And in July 1195, this is where one of the bloodiest battles of the Reconquista was fought.
