You're standing at the Lion Monument in Lucerne. Look at the cliff in front of you. This lion isn't sitting on a pedestal. He was carved straight out of the rock, in an old sandstone quarry. The relief is ten metres long and six metres high. Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen designed it, and stonemason Lukas Ahorn cut it out of the cliff in 1820 and 1821.
