You're looking out over the Danube here, about three kilometres downstream from Orșova. Beneath this water lies a vanished world: the island of Ada Kaleh. The name comes from Turkish and means Island Fortress. It was less than two kilometres long and about half a kilometre wide. In 1970 it disappeared under the water, when the Iron Gates hydroelectric dam was built.
