You're standing at Beckov Castle, a ruin perched on a steep rock above the Váh River in western Slovakia. Take a look up at that cliff. It did much of the defending on its own. Thanks to those high stone walls and sheer rock faces, Beckov is one of the few castles that held out against Tatar and Turkish attacks. In 1599 it saw off a Tatar siege.
