You're standing at the Roman Theatre of Mérida, one of the most famous ancient sites in Spain. When it was built, this town was called Emerita Augusta. Emperor Augustus founded it in 25 BC, and it became the capital of the Roman province of Lusitania. Marcus Agrippa commissioned the theatre, and an inscription tells us it was inaugurated in 15 BC.
