You're standing at Daugavpils Fortress, once known as Dinaburg and later as Dvinsk. Take a good look around, because this place is rare. It's the only early nineteenth-century military fortress of its kind in Northern Europe that survives without major changes. What you see is still largely what its Russian builders had in mind.
