You're standing at the church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, Saint Nicholas of the Roof, in the mountain village of Kakopetria in Cyprus. Start by looking at that roof, because that's what this place is all about. It's a steep timber roof covered with flat tiles, and it sits like an overcoat on top of a much older building. Underneath hides a perfectly ordinary Byzantine church, built on a cross-shaped plan and crowned with a dome. From outside you can barely tell the dome is there, and it's that protective roof that gave the church its nickname.
