You're standing at the Danevirke, by the village of Dannewerk in Schleswig-Holstein. The name means something like the earthwork of the Danes. It's a system of ramparts and ditches running across the narrow neck of Jutland, from the marshes in the west to Schleswig on the Baltic. All together it's about thirty kilometres long, and between 3.6 and 6 metres high.
