You're standing at the Red Church, just outside the small town of Perushtitsa, about fifteen kilometres southwest of Plovdiv. Take a good look at the walls. They're built entirely of brick, and that red colour is where the church gets its name. That's unusual, because solid brickwork is rare in Bulgarian churches from late antiquity. Only three survive: this one, the Hagia Sophia in Sofia and the Old Bishopric in Nesebar.
