You're standing at Rhamnous, on the northeast coast of Attica, looking out over the strait towards the island of Euboea. This is the best-preserved deme site in all of Attica. A deme was a kind of village district of ancient Athens. Have a look at the prickly shrubs around you. That's buckthorn, and it gave this place its name. It still grows here today.
