You're standing at the Laboe Naval Memorial, just northeast of Kiel. Look up at that tower. It rises seventy-two metres, towering over everything, with Kiel Fjord and the Baltic Sea spread out below. What does the shape remind you of? Guides often compare it to the prow of a Viking longship, or to the conning tower of a submarine. The architect, Gustav August Munzer, said it wasn't meant to represent anything in particular. He simply wanted people to feel something positive when they looked at it.
