You're standing at Rila Monastery, the largest and most famous Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. It sits more than eleven hundred metres up in the Rila Mountains, deep in the valley of the Rilska River. Start by looking at the outer walls. They're tall, made of stone, with small windows. It looks more like a fortress than a monastery.
